The other day I saw a photo of a bride in a black wedding gown and I thought, “Well that’s unusual.” But is it really? Who says you have to wear white, throw rice, or toss a bouquet? And who says your wedding ring has to include a diamond?

Just lately, I’ve been looking more closely at some of the rings available for men, and I discovered something. Even some of the handmade gemstone jewelry for men is boring.

Take a look at a few of the pieces the men in your life wear. Plain gold bands are the norm, after all, and they’re just…plain. Some jewelry designers try to spice up their men’s collections a bit by adding diamonds or maybe onyx, but I think we men can do better than that.

Don’t we deserve the same variety and freedom of expression women enjoy with their accessories? I certainly think so. I try to design my rings with both men and women in mind, and when I decided to add handmade gemstone jewelry to my collection, I was hopeful men would see it as an opportunity to let their personal style show.

One thing that seems to surprise people about my designs is the amount of detail they find on such delicate pendants and earrings. I admit, for handcrafted gemstone jewelry, it’s quite unusual. Many of the pieces I see elsewhere are larger and chunky by comparison, where mine tend to be daintier.

The Vine pendant is a perfect example. It’s just over one inch in height and features your choice of colored gemstone or cubic zirconia. To the casual observer, the bevel-set stone might take center stage, but a closer look reveals the true beauty of this piece – the intricate carving that surrounds the gem. The raised scrolls stand out against their textured background and reflect the light nearly as well as the stone itself does.

It’s all about “new” during 2012 at my studio. On the heels of the Lunar collection, I have created a completely updated look for some of my favorite pieces. The Scimitar pendant, with its intricate details, is the perfect example. I’ve added a choice of  CZ or colored stones such as amethyst, garnet, and citrine in both the gold and sterling silver versions. I’ve also updated the design to be softer and rounder, for a more delicate look. Recently I had the honor of working with two very special clients. Both loved my handcrafted gold earrings, but they wanted something truly unique, and I was happy to oblige.

One man contacted me because he wanted a distinctive gift for his wife’s birthday. The delicate Teardrop earrings had caught her eye. She loved the way the engraved spiral pattern encircled the center stone, but wanted something in red. I was thrilled to accommodate by replacing the diamonds with rubies. The result perfectly matched her personal style, and I know she’ll enjoy them for many years.

Another customer wished to treat herself to something special for her birthday. She was intrigued by the new Lunar earring collection, but had an unusual request. She wanted me to use her diamonds in place of the gemstones. These diamonds held great sentimental value, and she wanted more than anything to be able to wear them again. I was truly touched that she felt my earrings would be the perfect setting for her diamonds, and I must say, the result was simply stunning. What a wonderful gift for herself, and what an amazing heirloom for her children and grandchildren.

Both of these clients showed me a lot about how others see my designs. They didn’t simply see a pair of earrings. They saw a priceless keepsake – a tangible reminder of another place and time, one that will be cherished by future generations. I love that I was able to be a part of that.

2012 Fashion Trends include Artisan Crafted Jewelry Designs

Time was, artisan crafted jewelry was simply not seen on the runways and red carpets. I’m excited to see that’s changing. If you keep an eye on the fashion magazines, you’ve likely seen a noticeable shift in jewelry styles this year. I’m seeing three trends that are perfectly represented by my collections.

Bold geometrical shapes are making an appearance on the red carpet in the form of chunky rings paired with elegant column dresses. There is an interesting contrast between a sleek, sophisticated evening gown and a larger piece of jewelry like my Trickle Ring that makes you an instant celebrity, drawing every eye in the room.

Pendant necklaces – while never out of style – have made a big splash this year as well, and with good reason. A stunning pendant necklace pulls the eye downward for a long-necked, graceful look. They complement nearly every body type and wardrobe choice, from the layered looks of winter to the deep V-necks of spring and summer.

I’m also seeing yellow gold paired with colored stones, which is something I’ve been playing with for a while. In fact, I recently added a few silver pieces to my collection that feature colored gemstones, and have plans to create their gold counterparts soon.
